One of the most overlooked aspects of trauma is that it’s not just stored in your memory—it’s stored in your body. That feeling of being “stuck” isn’t just emotional. It’s physiological.

When something overwhelming happens and you don’t get to complete the natural response (like running, crying, saying no, or being held), that incomplete response can stay frozen in your system.

Here’s something you can try:

✅ The “Unfinished Story” Exercise

  • Think of a time when you felt frozen, overwhelmed, or like you couldn’t respond the way you wanted to.
  • You don’t have to relive it—just observe it from a distance.
  • Now imagine:
    What would you have liked to do if you had felt completely safe and empowered?
    • Say something?
    • Walk away?
    • Scream into the air?
    • Be hugged or comforted?

Take a few breaths and let your body imagine finishing that moment—not perfectly, but truthfully.

Even visualising the action your body wanted to take (but couldn’t) starts to complete the stress cycle. It tells your nervous system, we got through it.

You don’t have to force big emotional breakthroughs.
Just giving your body permission to finish what it started—gently, safely, and symbolically—can begin to melt the freeze.
